New malware targeting Apple products is mostly affecting Chinese users, warned an online security researcher.
US-based Palo Alto Networks said WireLurker which is infecting Apple's desktop and mobile operating systems appears to have originated in China and is mostly infecting devices there.
The malware spreads through apps uploaded from a third-party store and can steal information.
More than 400 infected apps have been downloaded over 350,000 times, it said.
"WireLurker is unlike anything we've ever seen in terms of Apple iOS and OS X malware," said Ryan Olson, the company's intelligence director.
"The techniques in use suggest that bad actors are getting more sophisticated when it comes to exploiting some of the world's best-known desktop and mobile platforms."
WireLurker has the ability to transfer from Apple's Mac computer to mobile devices through a USB cable.
Mac and iPhone The malware initially gets onto an iOS device via a USB link to an infected Mac computer
The security firm said the malware was capable of stealing "a variety of information" from mobile devices it infects and regularly requested updates from the attackers' control server.
"This malware is under active development and its creator's ultimate goal is not yet clear," the company added.
Work apps
According to Palo Alto Networks, WireLurker was first noticed in June when a developer at the Chinese firm Tencent realised there were suspicious files and processes happening on his Mac and iPhone.
Further inquiries revealed a total of 467 Mac programs listed on the Maiyadi App Store had been compromised to include the malware, which in turn had been downloaded more than 356,000 times as of 16 Oct.
Infected software included popular games including Angry Birds, The Sims 3, Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
Once the malware was on the Mac, it communicated with a command-and-control server to check if it needed to update its code, and then waited until an iPhone, iPad or iPod was connected.
When an iOS device was connected the malware would check if it was jailbroken - a process used by some to remove some of Apple's restrictions.
If it was jailbroken, WireLurker backed up the device's apps to the Mac, where it repackaged them with malware, and then installed the infected versions back on to the iOS machine.
If it was not jailbroken - which is the case for most iOS devices - WireLurker took advantage of a technique created by Apple to allow businesses to install special software on their staff's handsets and tablets.

Smoking, lots of nudity and marijuana: Instagram rule breaker Rihanna is back after a six month break...FEMAIL checks out her history on the photo sharing site
Never one to do things by halves, when Rihanna had some of her Instagram posts censored for breaching the site's nudity rules she duly upped and left.
Leaving her over 12 million followers bereft for an entire six months, the 26-year-old singer made a much lauded return to the social media site this week.
Already posting a few controversial snaps - one in particular that sees her leading the Instagram icon around like a dog on a lead - she has made it clear that her hiatus has not dampened her somewhat controversial spirit.

'Keep the Tower of London poppies': Boris Johnson pleads with organisers to keep 'incredible' display open for another week
Boris Johnson today called for the removal of the Tower of London's field of ceramic poppies to be delayed, to give more time for people to see the stunning display.
The London Mayor has issued a direct plea to organisers to extend the exhibition beyond next week's deadline of November 12, when up to four million people are expected to have paid tribute at the display of 888,246 poppies in the Tower's moat on the bank of the River Thames.
The vast installation, Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, has captured the public imagination as the nation marks 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War.
All of the poppies have been sold, at £25 each, with buyers hoping to have them in time for Christmas.

Lagos can tackle any disease, Fashola tells investors
Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, says the state has the capacity to combat any infectious disease, including the Ebola Virus Disease, should it rear its ugly head again.
The governor therefore told foreigners willing to visit or invest in the country that Lagos State, having successfully curbed the EVD was now safe and free from all infectious diseases.
Fashola, who was represented by his Deputy, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, said this during a programme tagged, ‘Lagos Welcomes Visitors’ organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism in conjunction with the state’s Ministry of Health.
He said before Ebola outbreak, the government had put in place measures that helped it contain the virus and prevent its spread in Nigeria as the state was the centre where all Ebola patients across the country were brought to for treatment.
He said, “Despite the fact that we did not expect Ebola in our state, we rose to the occasion and ensured that the disease was stamped out of the state and indeed Nigeria. Lagos being the economic nerve center of the country and the most populous state in the nation is aware of the importance of capacity building.
“We have over the years built our capacity to attend to any emergency knowing that Lagos belongs to all of us because we are conscious of the social contract we had with the people of the state, just as we are committed to good governance. The state more than ever before is safe and secure for visitors and tourist because it has always been our objective to make Lagos a city where all can live and work.”
Speaking on the impact of the EVD outbreak on the hospitality industry, the General Manager, Wheatbaker Hotel, Mr. Simon Grinrod, said although no hotel in the state recorded a case or a suspected case, the outbreak still affected it in a way, just as he said the outbreak made them improve on their hygiene.

INEC must explain to us how 1,447,845 voter registration cards disappeared – Fashola
Says figure an attempt to disenfranchise majority of Lagos electorate
By Clifford Ndujihe, Olasunkanmi Akoni & Monsur Olowoopejo
LAGOS—Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, described the 4.8 million registered voters figure for Lagos State by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as questionable even as the electoral body is set to distribute Permanent Voters’ Cards, PVCs, to that number of people in the State starting from Friday, November 7 to 9, 2014,
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in the state, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, had on October 29, announced the commission’s decision.

Fashola also described the figure as an attempt to disenfranchise majority of Lagos electorate in the forthcoming 2015 general elections as it showed a shortfall of 1,447,845 to the previously released 6,247,845 registered voters announced by INEC in the registration exercise before the 2011 elections.
Meantime, the governor has declared Friday, November 7, 2014, a work-free day for public servants to enable them participate in the first day of the PVCs distribution, which is a working day out of the three days earmarked for collection by INEC.
The governor made the remarks in a special state-wide broadcast to residents on the commencement of the issuance of PVCs by INEC in the state, held at the State House, Marina, Lagos.
Fashola noted that with the commencement of the process of issuance of PVCs in Lagos, the process for elections has therefore, started saying, election is a process, starting from voters’ registration, to balloting, to announcement of results and to election petition and swearing in of elected persons.
“So for the avoidance of any doubt, elections have started,” he said.
According to the governor; “This obligation has become very important because of the reports emanating from INEC at a press briefing by the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos that the number of voters in Lagos is now 4,800,000.
“This is strange, it is surprising and I believe INEC owes the people of Lagos a lot of answers and very quickly too.
