LASG to construct more power plants

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has promised the construction of more Independent Power Plants in the state in order to increase electricity supply. The governor stated this while inaugurating the Lagos Energy Academy at the State Electricity Board, Works Yard Road, Ikeja, Lagos. Fashola, who also inspected facilities at the academy, said the government was committed to building more IPPs in different parts of the state. The governor added that the academy was expected to train several batches of power engineers and artisans who would provide the human capital for lighting the state. He said, “The academy will provide training for young people to become technicians and electrical engineers and provide training in generation, transmission and distribution. “Very soon, these IPPs will be installed in all schools. So, we are taking the schools off regular generators carbon energy. So, this is a foundation for moving schools finally to electronic and e-learning because there would be regular and uninterrupted power.” Fashola said the state government’s initiative was significant because it connected the curriculum of the academy with the needs of the society. He said, “This initiative now is connecting our curriculum to the needs of our society. The biggest needs of our society presently is power and as the distribution companies are taking position, they are going to need men, women and the youth to provide the manpower, and the knowledge. “This is where we have decided to invest, to connect these young people to jobs that are waiting to be taken so that they do not continue to complain about unemployment. “Therefore, we have taken them from all levels, from vocational centres, technical colleges and through our school systems to give them a chance to start out a new career in power sector in Lagos.”
