As families hit the roads for the half-term holidays two horror crashes left four people dead and nearly 50 injured in separate incidents. One person died and nearly 50 were injured on the M40 near Bicester, Oxfordshire, after a massive pile-up involving up to 40 vehicles in thick fog. Eye witnesses described the aftermath as 'utter carnage' and a 'sea of metal.' Three people died on the M1 near Flitwick, Bedfordshire, after a collision between a coach and a car. Both fatal accidents happened on the northbound carriageway of the motorways and caused lengthy tailbacks.
