NAFDAC raids Aba market, arrests two, seals two shops over fake product

ABA—IN  its continued efforts to rid the nation’s markets of fake and unwholesome products, officials of National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC,  Tuesday, raided the Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State.
During the raid, which lasted several hours, two traders who were alleged to be involved in the sale of fake instant cold water starch product were arrested.
The NAFDAC officials from Lagos, in addition to arresting the suspects, also sealed their shops  while hundreds of cartons of the fake product worth several millions of Naira were seized.
Speaking after the operation, the Chief Regulatory Officer, Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, NAFDAC,  Uche Uzoma, said his office got information about the faking of the product, which was being manufactured by Cormart at Ilupeju, Lagos, adding that it was based on the strength of the information, that they moved in and raided the Eziukwu Market.
“We seized about 100 cartoons of the fake product and we are going to send them for laboratory analysis to confirm their status and from there, we take it further.
“Once the product is confirmed to be fake, those arrested would be prosecuted, of course, with the approval of the management.”
He said the agency had spread its dragnet to ensure that the fake products in other markets were confiscated.
