No bananas please, we're vegetarian! The foods you think are meat-free but actually contain SECRET animal products

No bananas please, we're vegetarian! The foods you think are meat-free but actually

Vegan campaigner Karin Ridgers, the founder of VeggieVision TV, reveals a surprising list of foods that many assume are vegetarian but actually contain animal products. Whether it's a result of the way the food is manufactured, the brewing process, or even the source of an item's colour, a variety of everyday 'meat free' items, are not safe for vegetarians to eat. Clockwise from top left:
Red sweets can be coloured with a natural dye made from crushed beetles; Japanese miso soup could have dashi or dried fish flakes; frosted wheat breakfast cereals contain beef gelatine to help the sugar stick; figs can contain protein from dead wasps; bananas are sprayed with a pesticide derived from crabs' shells; marshmallows contain gelatine, from boiling pig or cow bones; Parmesan cheese is made with animal rennet from calves' stomachs; and Guinness is filtered using isinglass which comes from fish guts.
