Agony and tears for England's Lionesses as they crash out of Women's World Cup after defender Laura Bassett scores a freak own goal in injury time to put Japan through to the final

England crash out of Women’s World Cup 2015 after Laura Bassett's own goal

England's women's football team were knocked out of the World Cup at the semi-final stage last night, losing 2-1 to reigning champions Japan in Edmonton, Canada. Defender Laura Bassett, 31, (pictured left and centre) had to be helped from the field by her teammates after she scored a freak own goal in the final minute of injury time.
Two soft penalties in the first half had tied the game 1-1 at half time and England had looked the most likely to win in the second half. But their hard work was cruelly undone in the dying seconds of the game when Bassett attempted to block a cross, only to chip the ball over her own keeper (top right).
