Taking tips from Kim Kardashian? Lara Bingle appears to model the reality queen as she steps out in strikingly similar outfit

She's a front row regular at catwalk shows and has even designed her own clothing range. But Lara Bingle seemed to have modelled her sartorial style on another designer diva when she stepped out in Sydney on Thursday. Dressed in a skin-tight nude tank top and army green skirt, the stylish blonde, 27, looked to have been borrowing fashion tips from reality television queen Kim Kardashian, who wore a strikingly similar getup just two months earlier. The most famous member of the Kardashian clan, 33, had jaws dropping in August when she was spotted in a flesh-coloured top that much like Lara's, almost exactly matched her skin tone. The stretchy material clung so tightly to the socialite's frame that at a passing glance she may have been mistaken as topless.

Not always him! Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli at centre of Twitter storm after 'turning up at House of Commons for drugs debate' - but it turns out to be a lookalike

A Tory MP caused a Twitter storm today after claiming that Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli had turned up at the House of Commons to listen in on a Government drug debate. Guy Opperman was so sure he had spotted the famous footballer that he breathlessly tweeted his 5,000 followers: 'Mario Balotelli has popped in to Commons gallery'. The tweet, sent during a debate on the merits of decriminalisation, added that he was donning 'a sharp suit, pink shirt and a poppy'. The apparent sighting sparked excitement in Parliament, with members of the press craning their necks to catch a glimpse of the Italian player. But they soon realised Mr Opperman was mistaken - and the man was actually a 55-year-old with a similar Balotelli-style mohawk. The man in question was later revealed to be Ken Hinds, a dancer and activist who has worked as a mediator for Scotland Yard.

16000 new cases of stroke reported in Nigeria annually

Mrs Gloria Ekeng, Founder, Stroke Care International, on Wednesday said that Nigeria had over 16000 new stroke cases annually. Ekeng disclosed this in an interview on the sidelines of a walk and screening exercise hosted by the organisation to mark the World Stroke Day. She said that in reality, without proper data, it was impossible to know the exact amount of stroke cases that occurred in the country every year. “The estimate is between 40 to 60 per cent, our data is incomplete because we do not have information on stroke cases in the villages and rural areas generally,” she said. She said that most people have failed to realise that stroke was a medical condition, saying that many have continued to blame it on witchcraft and curses. “Lack of education, not in terms of academic learning but in terms of awareness about stroke, has contributed to the growing incidence of stroke in the country. “People do not realise that stroke is a medical emergency or that it could be prevented,” she said. Ekeng said that the warning signs of stroke include persistent headaches that did not respond to painkillers and weakness or heaviness in certain parts of the body. She also identified obscured and blurred vision as other warning signs of stroke. According to Ekeng, people whose blood pressure was terribly high had a serious risk of hemorrhagic stroke. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/16000-new-cases-stroke-reported-nigeria-annually/#sthash.J26EXtJ7.dpuf

2015: Kwankwaso declares, says Jonathan incompetent

The Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Tuesday formally declared his interest in vying for the Presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress. At a rally held at the Old Parade Ground, in Abuja, the Presidential aspirant during the occasion, cast aspersions on the President Goodluck Jonathan-led Peoples Democratic Party administration, describing it as incompetent. He observed that Nigerians were today exposed to unimaginable hardship which, he said, was due to the failure of leadership at the highest levels. Kwankwaso noted that the looting of public funds had gone on unabated because those saddled with the responsibility of watching over the nation’s wealth were busy stealing it. He also expressed sadness that the welfare of women and children as well as the most vulnerable in society had not been given its pride of place in the scheme of things. The aspirant commended Nigerian youths for being angry. He said anger in today’s Nigeria was a virtue because those saddled with the responsibility of providing a conducive atmosphere for citizens to achieve their life’s goals had failed in their responsibilities. The governor hailed the APC for being the only party which had internal democracy. Kwankwaso said, “The call to save our dear country has never been louder, clearer and more unambiguous than now. Every facet of our national life is deteriorating. Governance has been reduced to mediocrity, incompetence and impunity. I have no doubt in my mind that this journey is difficult.” He also said no matter how difficult, the journey was worth embanking on because the nation was in dire need of salvation. Kwankwaso said should he get the job, he would concentrate on the restoration of peace and security to the country by defeating the Boko Haram sect. He said, “Lives and properties of our citizens must be protected and secured. Boko Haram and all forms of insurgency must be defeated. As a government, we cannot afford to live in denial. Insecurity is escalating at an alarming rate.

US School Bans Student After Attending Wedding In Nigeria

A Nigerian man resident in the US has sued a Connecticut school for banning his daughter over Ebola fears. Stephen Opayemi has filed a complaint against the Meadowside Elementary School, in Milford, Connecticut after the school banned his 7-year-old daughter, Ikeoluwa for 21 days, the normal quarantine period for the disease. Opayemi and his daughter had attended a wedding in Nigeria and this caused panic as parents and teachers were concerned that she could transmit Ebola to other children in the school despite the fact that she had not exhibited any symptoms. The aggrieved father filed the suit in a federal court in New Haven, Connecticut and asked a judge to order the school to allow Ikeoluwa back into class. The child’s mother Ikeolapo Opayemi said: "We're hoping this will get her back into school as soon as possible." Nigeria had 20 Ebola cases and eight deaths before it successfully contained the disease and was declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organization on Oct. 20. Author

Ghana to cut gas import from Nigeria

Ghana has announced plans to significantly reduce the quantity of gas it purchases from Nigeria in the next couple of months through increased local gas production. gas tanksPresident of Ghana, Mr. John Mahama, who was responding to questions on the economy at the Global African Investment Summit in London, said the country is working hard to court more private investors to shore up local production of gas to solve the country’s power crisis. He said this will end the country’s over-reliance on the West African gas pipeline which has been inconsistent with supplying gas to the country. He said, “We had a lot of excitement when the gas pipeline was built hoping that the abundance of Nigerian gas will flow through the pipeline to help all the four countries signed onto the pipeline, but the volume has been very disappointing.” He, however, expressed the hope that the country’s current energy crisis will stabilise when works on the Atuabo gas processing plant is completed, adding that the plant should start producing gas for power generation by the end of November. Mahama said the facility, which has the capacity to generate about 140 million standard cubic feet of natural gas a day, is estimated to save the country more than $500 million annually when it is substituted for light crude oil in the generation of power. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/ghana-cut-gas-import-nigeria/#sthash.nIgJIBMV.dpuf

Escaped Boko Haram Victims Narrate Horrific Ordeal

A report published by New York-based Human Rights Watch has detailed the horrific treatment that some of Boko Haram’s victims were subjected to while in captivity. HRW spoke to 47 witnesses and victims including 12 of the 57 of the girls who were fortunate enough to escape from the terrorists after being abducted from Chibok, Borno in April. The victims tell stories of rape, forced marriage and how they were forced to participate in Boko Haram’s crimes in a 63-page report, entitled "'Those Terrible Weeks in Their Camp': Boko Haram Violence against Women and Girls in Northeast Nigeria.” A 15 year-old girl told of how she was forced to marry one of the insurgents and had to live in his cave:
"He soon began to threaten me with a knife to have sex with him, and when I still refused he brought out his gun, warning that he would kill me if I shouted," She added that the "huge man in his mid-30s" raped her every night. One 19-year-old was ordered to kill a soldier who she had been forced to lure into a trap. She said: "When they followed me for a short distance the insurgents swooped on them." "They slit the throats of four of them as they shouted 'Allahu Akbar’,then I was handed a knife to kill the last man. I was shaking with horror and couldn’t do it. The camp leader’s wife took the knife and killed him." Another victim spoke of how the militants threatened to kill her and her friends after discovering that they were students. The terrorists reportedly told them: “Aha! These are the people we are looking for. So you are the ones with strong heads who insist on attending school when we have said ‘boko’ is ‘haram.’ We will kill you here today.” The Nigerian Foreign Minister, Aminu Wali has insisted that negotiations are still ongoing to free the remaining 219 Chibok girls, who have now spent more than six months in captivity, but the accounts rendered by the escaped victims have raised concerns about the mental and physical trauma that the girls who are still being held might have suffered.

Government Is Lying To Us, Chibok Parents Say

The parents of the abducted Chibok girls have accused the Federal Government of not being honest about the rescue or release of their daughters. They stated further that they had lost hope concerning their daughters as despite the promises made by the government, the girls had still not returned home. One of the parents, Mallam Pur Chibok told the Nigerian Tribune in Maiduguri: “Our tears no longer tell the story, as we know what we are going through, but whoever has a hand in the abduction of our daughters would have many troubles before his time comes.” “We would not talk much about our daughters, but those who abducted them should know they have abducted the wrong girls to play politics with” he added. Mallam Pur also said that he took the reports that the girls would be released on October 20 and then October 27 with a pinch of salt and instructed his relatives to do the same. He said: “They said it was not last Monday again, but this Monday; still, there was no hope. For me, I have lost a daughter, but await miracle to happen so I can see her again. If so, I will be happy, but if not, I believe we will meet again hereafter, but I do not want to rely on promises which do not hold water.” “They told us they have negotiated, yet the whole issue is taking a different dimension.” The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Wali has assured that negotiations are ongoing to free the Chibok girls and that they would return home in the “very near future.”

Farmer Becomes Miss Uganda

23-year-old farmer, Leah Kalanguka, has beaten all comers to emerge Miss Uganda. The virtually unknown Leah from Busembatya in Iganga district in the Eastern region, is also a Computer Engineering student in the prestigious Makerere University. According to the Ugandan Observer Newspaper, Leah did not have that 'wow' or the 'Oh my God' look, but her infectious smile and confidence before the judges outwitted 19 other girls to the crown, winning herself a brand new Toyota Spacio and monthly allowance of Shs 1 million for her entire reign until 2015. She told The Observer moments later that when she left their Kampala home in Muyenga, she was faithful she would emerge winner and wouldn't let anything stand her way to the crown. When I heard that this year's theme is about agribusiness to ensure promoting agricultural entrepreneurship among the youth, I knew this is something I could do because I am involved in farming. Kalanguka missed the eastern regional search because she was away in Tooro, helping out to teach youths how to grow cabbages, something she learnt from her mother, an agriculture teacher at Makerere College School. But she made it a point to enter the Kampala pre-selection, which was open to all single girls who have never given birth and who are between the ages of 18 and 24. It was then that she caught the eye of the judges and made it to the finalists' list. Kalanguka confesses that she didn't know much about what it takes to be a beauty queen, but Joram Muzira, one of the Miss Uganda tutors, helped her a lot. I come from a family where you have to be the best. So, in every challenge, I take keen note on how to outwit others. I focused on what Joram taught me, especially how to impress the judges and how to smile. The third born in a family of six girls, Kalanguka may be no stranger to friendly cat fights. All her five sisters were in attendance, screaming their lungs out from the moment she took an early lead as Miss Photogenic.

Tambuwal decamps to APC today, to contest Sokoto governorship

Citing the division of the Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal is expected this morning to decamp to the All Progressives Congress, APC. It would be the first time since the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1999 that any of the two presiding officers of the National Assembly would belong to another party apart from the PDP. Today’s decamping will provide him the necessary party qualification to vie for the governorship ticket on the platform of the APC, which itself, is to amend its constitution tomorrow to allow Tambuwal and other last minute decampees from the PDP to vie for elective offices on the party’s platform. Tambuwal Tambuwal Besides adopting a manifesto, the APC convention would scrap the provision in its constitution stipulating a 30-day membership duration for anyone seeking to use the party’s platform to campaign for public office. Tambuwal, who is expected to make his first public appearance at an APC gathering at tomorrow’s national convention, would remain in office till next June. Associates of the speaker, who disclosed the plan ahead of today’s sitting of the House of Representatives affirmed that the speaker’s announcement would not in any way affect his continued stay as speaker or a member of the House. “He is going to announce it in plenary and he will not resign as speaker and he will not resign as member,” a close associate of the speaker privy to the development confided in Vanguard last night. Justifying the decision of the speaker to decamp, a reliable source in the know of the plans said on the basis of confidentiality: “Every politics is local and the direction of Sokoto is towards the APC and because he is representing some people in Abuja, he has to move along with the dictates of the people and it cannot be said that the people in his constituency are in a particular party and he is in another party.” Giving the constitutional justification, he said: “The justification is that there is a faction in Sokoto PDP and if there is no faction, Anenih would not have led a reconciliation meeting to Sokoto last week and secondly, Wamakko would not have decamped if it was a party that is in peace,” he added.

New Commander Takes Over US Military Mission To Combat Ebola In West Africa

New commander on Saturday took over the US military mission to combat Ebola in West Africa, the Pentagon said. In Monrovia, Major General Gary Volesky of the US Army 101st Division took command of troops that are part of Washington’s effort to counter the deadly outbreak, a Defense Department statement said. West Africa is the epicenter of the outbreak that has killed nearly 5,000 people. “Just 38 days ago, Major General Darryl Williams arrived in Liberia to form an advance detachment in his capacity as commanding general, US Army Africa prior to the formal establishment of this Joint Forces Command,” the statement said. “In this short period, our service members, under his leadership, have made great advances in establishing command and control capabilities for this effort including lines of communication over very rough terrain.” The mission has helped expand lab work, and a 25-bed hospital is due to be operational in early November according to the statement. “In addition, construction of the first Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) at Tubmanburg is nearing completion,” it said, adding that two more were to follow. Meanwhile in Senegal an intermediate staging base and transport hub is being set up in Dakar, and the contracted vessel M/V Vega arrived in the area this week with around 700 containers of support equipment. Some 700 US service members are now deployed to West Africa, including nearly 600 in Liberia and 100 in Senegal. In coming weeks, that could grow to more than 3,900.

Ebonyi Wins NAFEST 2014

Host state, Ebonyi, has emerged the winner of this year's edition of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST). Ebonyi emerged tops at the 28th edition of the festival by winning six events-- Arts and craft, documentary, traditional cuisine, essay writing, traditional storytelling and traditional wrestling. A total of 19 states participated in the festival, with Niger and Akwa Ibom placed second and third respectively while Benue, Bauchi and Anambra were joint fourth place winners. Ebonyi also won the hosting state gong award as it replicated Bayelsa’s feat in 2013 when it hosted and won the festival. Gov. Martin Elechi said at the closing ceremony on Saturday at the Abakaliki Township Stadium that the event lived up to the billing. “It is gratifying that the festival was a huge success despite the teething problems and uncertainty surrounding its exact date of commencement after the Ebola-induced postponement. "Abakaliki has been a beehive of activities in the past one week as the contingents jostled for honours in various events. "Our state and its people were witnesses to creativity and history. `` I declare that all participants are winners in their own right though winners of competitive events would savour their victory," he said. Elechi said that like the International Olympic Movement which places premium on participation above laurels, NAFEST provides a unique platform for the celebration and renewal of the nation's rich cultural heritage. "Nigerians of diverse geo-cultural areas have come together in unity and brotherhood to celebrate our culture, as the emblem of our identity and the showpiece of our tourist endowments," he said. He congratulated the participants from various states for being part of the historic celebration. The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Chief Edem Duke, represented by Mrs Dayo Keshi, the Director General, National Council for Arts and Culture, thanked the government and people of Ebonyi for hosting a successful festival. "This festival ranks among the best in the festival's history as it justified its tag of being a symbol of national unity, " he said.

Interesting! OAP Osam reviews P-Square's new album

If you loved or didn't like P-Square's new album Double Trouble, then you need to read this review by popular OAP and comedian, Osam. Find below... The accepted norm to know a singer or an artiste’s worth is the reeling out of an LP or an album. In Nigeria today, there is more concentration from artistes in spewing out single after single in the silent bid that one just might be the hit they have been craving for. P-Square is a group that defies logic in this game of from single to album. There is this midas touch from these boys that just keeps everybody in awe. Hate ‘em, Love ‘em, they are one of the very few professionals left in this dispensation. As an OAP, I play back to back hit songs for 6hours Monday to Friday, and I now want to take a critical look at albums that have come out recently so as to know why the craze for singles short of albums which is every artiste’s nightmare. This is a review of Psquare’s 6TH album DOUBLE TROUBLE. Track 1: SHEKINI An ‘African Jungle Beat’ as I term it, popularised the likes of Davido’s ‘AYE/SKELEWU’,Runtown’s ‘GALLARDO’ etc. It’s a beat with a waist winding push and prompts to mind the wave of the SHOKI/SKELEWU/SEKEM dance. The joker about this track is that the Igbo boys that isPsquare actually sang the hook in impeccable Yoruba. Attention grabbing track for an album opener. Track 2: MISSING YOU A nice highlife track. I believe Sunny Neji is one ingredient missing from this track. It has its upbeat swing that brings in the vintage Psquare flavour. Guys, make sure you are not missing your lady when listening to this track. Track 3: BRING IT ONft DAVE SCOTT A personal favourite. An initial 20 second listen of this track from the start would leave you guessing if it’s a foreign track. Featuring Dave Scott, a hitherto unknown American singer from Texas. Listening to this mid tempo pop track with its undulating beat, apart from its message of hope, voice artistry comes into play here. The harmony of Dave’s voice and that of Psquare is absolutely timed and mind blowing. Rudeboy himself solely produced this one, and that would be Paul Okoye!

Ex-private schoolboy, 19, who became fourth Portsmouth jihadist to die fighting for ISIS tried to flee Syria but was caught by militants just eight minutes from the border

A former Portsmouth schoolboy who died while fighting for ISIS tried to escape Syria but was captured only minutes away from meeting his mother across the Turkish border. The family of Mehdi Hassan, 19, who attended a private Catholic school in Hampshire, confirmed he died in the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani after a picture of his body emerged on Twitter. Hassan, who also used the alias Abu Dujana, had expressed plans to return to Britain over the last few months but had been scared about the repercussions and the threat of prosecution on terror charges, his family said.

Jonathan can’t win in 2015 because he never won any election in the past –Junaid Mohammed

In this interview with JOHN ALECHENU, a Kano State delegate to the just concluded National Conference and convener of the Coalition of Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, speaks about his brush with the law and other sundry national issues. Excerpts You were once arrested by the State Security Service for a statement you made which it considered inciting. What do you make of your arrest? It was true I was invited. That was the word they used. I was invited by the SSS to present myself at their Kano State office which is about one and half kilometres from my residence. Before I arrived Kano from Abuja, there were some shadowy characters who were following me. The order for my arrest came directly from the Director of Operations, an Igbo man. Apparently, he does not like anyone who says anything uncomplimentary about Igbo people and their greed. I think he was particularly very unhappy because I said Igbo have taken charge of the economy and that they have also grabbed most of the land especially for estates in Abuja;

Pictured: Inside the house of horrors where Russian historian held birthday parties for 150 little girls he had dug up from their graves and mummified

Footage has emerged of the house of horrors where a Russian historian held birthday parties for 150 little girls he had dug up from their graves and mummified. Anatoly Moskvin, 46, from the city of Nizhny Novgorod in central Russia, was arrested in 2011 after it emerged he had dug up corpses of girls aged between three and 12. He then took the bodies home and turned them into a grisly collection of mummies, dressing the bodies and skeletons in stockings and dresses and even making one look like a teddy bear. A video made by Moskvin and found at his apartment by investigators showed a corridor cluttered with wedding dresses and bright, colourful clothes. It shows the bodies sitting around his house in a series of bizarre costumes. This week a judge revealed that Moskvin was not mentally fit to stand trial and should remain in a psychiatric clinic. Moskvin, who speaks 13 languages and was described in court as a 'genius', gave the mummified corpses names and organised birthday parties for them. All of little girls had died years earlier.

Aww...read what UK Telegraph wrote about Governor Fashola

In a piece titled "Meet The Man Who Tamed Nigeria's Most Lawless City", UK Telegraph chronicles how Governor Fashola came into office and transformed Lagos and also how he effectively managed the Ebola epidermic in the state. Read below... He famously claims to be "just doing his job". But in a land where politicians are known for doing anything but, that alone has been enough to make Babatunde Fashola, boss of the vast Nigerian city of Lagos, a very popular man. Confounding the image of Nigerian leaders as corrupt and incompetent, the 51-year-old governor has won near-celebrity status for transforming west Africa's biggest city, cleaing up its crime-ridden slums and declaring war on corrupt police and civil servants. Next month, he will come to London to meet business leaders and Mayor Boris Johnson's officials, wooing investors with talk of how he has spent the last seven years building new transport hubs and gleaming business parks. Yet arguably his biggest achievement in office took place just last week, and was done without a bulldozer in sight. That was when his country was officially declared free of Ebola, which first spread to Nigeria three months ago when Patrick Sawyer, an infected Liberian diplomat, flew into Lagos airport. Health officials had long feared that the outbreak, which has already claimed nearly 5,000 lives elsewhere in west Africa, would reach catastrophic proportions were it to spread through Lagos. One of the largest cities in the world, it is home to an estimated 17 million people, many of them living in sprawling shanty towns that would have become vast reservoirs for infection. To make matters worse, when the outbreak first happened, medics were on strike. Instead, Mr Fashola turned a looming disaster into a public health and PR triumph. Breaking off from a trip overseas, he took personal charge of the operation to track down and quarantine nearly 1,000 people feared to have been infected since Mr Sawyer's arrival. Last week, what would have been a formidably complex operation in any country came to a successful end, when the World Health Organisation announced that since Nigeria had had no new cases for six weeks, it was now officially rid of the virus. "This is a spectacular success story," said Rui Gama Vaz, a WHO spokesman, who prompted an applause when he broke the news at a press conference in Nigeria on Tuesday. "It shows that Ebola can be contained. The WHO announcement was a rare glimmer of hope in the fight against Ebola, and even rarer vote of confidence in a branch of the Nigerian government, which was heavily criticised over its response to the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls by the Boko Haram insurgent group in April. As a columninst in Nigeria's Leadership newspaper put it last week: "For once, we did not underachieve." For Mr Fashola's many supporters, it is also yet more proof that the 51-year-old ex-lawyer is a future president in the making, a much-needed technocrat in a country dominated far too long by ageing "Big Men" and ex-generals. "He is the best governor we have ever had," said Odun Babalola, a Lagos-based pension fund portfolio manager. "He's made a lot of progress in schools, railways, and infrastructure, and unlike a lot of politicians, who are corrupt, he's a good administrator." True, the successful tackling of the Ebola outbreak was not Mr Fashola's doing alone. For a start, the doctor's strike that was under way when Mr Sawyer collapsed at Lagos airport turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Rather than being taken to one of Lagos's vast public hospitals, where he might have languished for hours and infected numerous fellow patients and staff, he was instead admitted to a private clinic. There he was seen by a sharp-eyed consultant, Stella Adadevoh, who spotted that his symptoms were not malaria as had been first thought. She then alerted the Nigerian health ministry, and along with other doctors physically restrained Sawyer when he became aggressive and tried to leave the hospital to fly to another Nigerian city. Her quick thinking help stop the virus being spread more widely, but also cost her her life: she caught Ebola herself while treating Mr Sawyer, and has now been recommended for a national award. But even by the time Mr Sawyer had been isolated, the virus was already on the loose. Knowing that he had passed through one of the busiest airports in west Africa, health officials had to try to track down every single person who had potentially been infected by him, including the other passengers on his flight. The list started at 281 people and grew to nearly 1,000. as eight others whom he turned out to have passed the virus to subsequently died. That was where Mr Fashola stepped in. He broke off from a pilgrimage to Mecca, flew home and then helped set up an Ebola Emergency Operations Centre, which spearheaded the mammoth task of monitoring all those potentially infected. A team of 2,000 officials were trained for the task, who ended up knocking on 26,000 doors. At one point the governor was being briefed up to ten times a day by disease control experts. He made a point of visiting the country's Ebola treatment centre, a way of communicating to the Nigerian public that they should not panic needlessly. "Command and control is very important in fighting disease outbreaks, and he provided effective leadership," said Dr Ike Anya, a London-based Nigerian public health expert. "He also said exactly the right things, urging for the need to keep calm. Regardless of whether you support his politics, he has been very effective as a governor and I would be happy to see him stand for leadership." Born into a prominent Muslim family but married to a Christian, Mr Fashola trained as a lawyer and went into politics after being appointed chief of staff by the previous Lagos governor, Asiwaju Tinubu, a powerful politician often described as Mr Fashola's "Godfather". But while he has long enjoyed the backing of a political "Big Man", is his role as a rare defender of Nigeria's "Little Men" that has won him most support. Once, while driving through Lagos in his convoy, he famously stopped an army colonel who was driving illegally in one of the governor's newly-built bus lanes, berating him in front of television cameras. "The bus is for those who cannot afford to buy cars," he said. "I want a zero tolerance of lawlesness, and those who don't want to comply can leave our state." It was one of the first times Nigerians had ever seen a civil servant confronting a member of the security forces, whose fondness for committing crime rather than fighting it has long contributed to Lagos's legendary reputation for lawlessness. Armed robberies - sometimes by moonlighting police - used to be so common that few people ventured out after dark. Foreign businessmen would routinely travel with armed escorts, and the few willing to live there would stay mainly in a heavily-guarded diplomatic area called Victoria Island, a rough equivalent to Baghdad's Green Zone. Add to that the suffocating smog, widespread squalor and regular three-hour traffic jams, and it was no suprise that the city had a reputation as one of the worst places in the world to live. Today, much of the problems remain. But members of the vast Nigerian diaspora say they now notice big changes whenever they go back. "When you return you see an absolute difference - things have improved 100 per cent," said Nels Abbey, a London-based Nigerian journalist and businessman. "Traffic is not what it used to be, bus lanes have been introduced, and it feels a lot safer. Fashola has been like a Tory mayor for Lagos - he is trying to make it attractive to the well-off." Styling himself as Lagos's answer to Boris Johnson has not endeared him to everyone. As well as laying plans for a vast offshore business park intended as an "African Dubai", he has accelerated programs to clear the ever-expanding shanty towns, ordering their occupants to return to their homes in Nigeria's poorest east and north. That has led to criticism from human rights groups, although others say it is hard to see how Lagos will ever improve otherwise. "Do I endorse it?" said Mr Nels. "I am afraid it is a bit of a necessary evil." Another big achievement has been increasing tax revenues, vital in a city where the GDP of $43 billion makes it the fifth-biggest economy in sub-Saharan Africa. Mr Fashola has tried to sweeten the pill by putting up signs on all new infrasructure projects, saying "paid for by your taxes". It is a rare acknowledgement of gratitude in a country where a guaranteed stream of state oil wealth has historically allowed rulers to remain aloof from the ruled. However, despite being relected with 80 per cent of the vote in 2011, the main hailed as Nigeria's brightest political hope in years is far from guaranteed a life in office. Having served two terms in office already, he is not allowed to run as Lagos governor again. And as a member of a minority tribe and the country's opposition All Progressives Congress, he currently lacks the political backing to go head to head against Goodluck Jonathan in next year's elections. In the meantime, fresh from ridding Lagos of Ebola, he is focusing on an arguably even tougher challenge, launching a new initiative to stop motorists stuck in traffic jams from blasting their horns all day. As he put it: "If we can overcome Ebola, then we can overcome noise pollution."

South Africa returns seized $15m to Nigeria

The South African Ambassador to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, said in a news conference on Friday that the $15m earlier seized from some Nigerians by the South African Government had been released to Nigeria. The South African Government had, on September 5, 2014, seized $9.3m cash belonging to Nigeria and a month later seized another $5.7m, claiming that both funds were to be used for illegal purchase of arms, www.thecable.ng reported. However, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, said the transactions were legal, urging the South African Government to stop actions that could degenerate to a diplomatic showdown. The South African Government on October 14, 2014 said it would return the money to Nigeria. Mnguni also spoke on the collapsed building in the Synagogue church in Lagos State and its effect on the relationship between the two countries. He said that the two countries had come a long way and that the development would only make them remain stronger. “South Africa’s relations with Nigeria has come a long way, so now this actually will make us much closer, to see how we can close some of these gaps that result in such accidents,” he said. The South African ambassador added that the seizure of the funds was in no way related to the Synagogue collapse. “South Africa’s relation with Nigeria is priceless; it cannot be sold for $15m,” he said.

Oh baby that's cute! Sleeping newborns photographed in adorable poses that can only be taken before they are 14 days old

When they're sleeping soundly the precious darlings look their most angelic. But one artist has managed to make a group of snoozing newborn babies look even more precious by dressing them up and positioning them for a unique photo shoot. Professional photographer Joanne Collins, 39, who is based in Sittingbourne, Kent, waits until the babies are in a very deep sleep so she can move them about without them waking. The heart-melting pouts and smiles, though, are all their own doing. Joanne specialises in capturing newborns posed as they slumber, and is an expert at handling them from a very early age. She says that it is best to photograph the youngsters at between just five to ten days, before they lose their foetal-like poses. The babies are seen snuggled into warm blankets and cushions, some adorned in cute woollen hats or cosy in baby baskets in the adorable pictures.

2015: Jonathan’s re-election will set Nigeria ablaze again – Gumi

KADUNA – Well known Islamic Cleric, Sheik Dr. Ahmed Gumi has foretold of violence should President Goodluck Jonathan go on to contest and win the 2015 Presidential election. Gumi made this known in an open letter he wrote the President yesterday and made available to Vanguard in Kaduna. Reads the letter: “We have never met despite the fact that we were all born and we lived for more than half a century in this great vast country Nigeria. It’s here we all grew up and were educated and I presume except by divine prudence it’s here that we will all be buried.
“So what truly matters is the legacy that we will bequest our children and the next generation of Nigerians to come. We will not want it a burnt country with hundreds of thousands dead, maimed or displaced people because of the thoughtlessness and recklessness of its stewardship. “Nigeria today is a single railway line with two heavily loaded trains spending towards each other in opposite direction. President Jonathan President Jonathan “You need to come out of the cocoon and face the reality. Denial of the truth can never solve problems. “Mr. President, from what I heard from people who are close to you, is that you are humble with a soft heart. But still humility is never enough for an effective leadership. Leadership is about listening and taking the good advices from people of wisdom not from those that benefit from you or have any agenda other than the unity and progress of this Nation. “The mantle of the leadership of this country was given to you under oath. Almost four years ago you swore to protect ‘the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, well-being and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’. You said: ‘ I will not allow my personal interest to influence my official conduct or my official decisions; and ‘I will do right to all manner of people, according to law, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will’

Numb to horror: Women walk past headless corpses in the street without raising an eyebrow in shocking video depicting life under ISIS rule

For months its brutality has been documented in propaganda designed to frighten the world into considering its terrorist cause. But footage of life under the rule of ISIS has revealed the lasting effects of the group's barbarity, with women and children strolling past the decapitated bodies of Syrian soldiers in the city of Raqqa without giving them a second glance. Unaffected by the sight of the decaying corpses, civilians do not even acknowledge the men's impaled heads positioned on fences across the city which has become a recruiting hub for extremists.

Did hero teacher prevented massacre at Washington school? Student account reveals how she grabbed arm of gunman, 15, as he reloaded after shooting five classmates in cafeteria

This is the teacher who is said to have heroically accosted a 15-year-old boy as he fired bullets across his high school cafeteria. Megan Silberberger ran into the room after hearing Jaylen Fryberg shoot dead one classmate and critically wound four others. Students dived for cover and others fled but as the popular teenager stopped to reload his gun, witnesses told KIRO-TV, Silberberger walked over and grabbed his arm. In a two-second struggle, Fryberg is said to have pointed the gun at her before shooting himself dead. The shocking account suggests Silberger, a first year social services teacher and part-time soccer player, may have prevented a massacre at the Washington school. Nonetheless, hundreds of students, teachers and parents piled into a nearby church tonight for a candlelit vigil as the community reels in shock struggling to cope with the tragic loss of two lives as four teenagers are treated in hospital.

I don’t mind dating a younger man now –Ara

Now single drummer girl, Ara, has said she is ready to give marriage another shot now that she and her once Iceland-based hubby have divorced. In an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats recently, Ara said she wouldn’t even mind going for a younger guy if he comes around her. “When I meet the right person and fall in love, I will consider marriage. I really want to fall in love again. I don’t believe in marriage just for its sake. If a younger guy comes up to me, I don’t mind dating the person. I don’t mind marrying somebody who I am older than. I have spoken to a couple of people and they don’t see anything wrong with it. If the person has a mature mind and is committed, then it is not a big deal.” When asked if she is not looking for somebody who she can control and manipulate, the singer said she is not the overbearing type and she never exhibited such trait in her former marriage. “I am not that kind of person. I am the most submissive wife. I am ‘mumu’ for love. You can ask my ex, he can tell you. There was never a day I didn’t ask him what I should cook even though I was the breadwinner. I would always ask him what he wanted. And whatever he said, if we didn’t have it, I would jump on an okada and enter the market to go and buy the stuff. I am a hopeless lover,” she said. Ara revealed that she and her ex are still “good friends” because, “we have a child together. My boy is six years already. He has remarried. I am not envious that he got married again. God forbid! When he calls me, I always ask him if his wife isn’t around. I would also ask him if his wife knows that I am not interested in him. I don’t know her and I don’t know her name. I wouldn’t want her to feel I want to take her husband again. So I tell him I hope the wife knows that I am not interested and that his calling me is just to find out about his son. I wouldn’t want to make any woman unhappy.

Building collapse: T.B. Joshua, contractor face coroner Nov 5

The founder and General Overseer of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, Pastor T.B. Joshua, has been slated to appear before the coroner investigating the cause of the church’s building that collapsed on September 12, 2014. Joshua will be appearing on November 5, 2014 alongside the contractor handling the collapsed six-storey building. No fewer than 115 died in the collapsed building. The coroner, Magistrate O.A. Komolafe, during the sitting of the court on Friday, stated that the appearance of the church’s founder was important to the findings of the court. Though counsel to the church, Mr. Jude Nnadi, said Joshua’s appearance would not be necessary because he was not an eyewitness to the incident, Komolafe insisted that he must appear. The magistrate, who said he had heard that Joshua had addressed the press at various times, said he must also appear before the court to give evidence. Komolafe said, “We have heard that he has been addressing the press at various times, let him come and address the court. “The court has summoned him, let him come and tell us what he knows. He cannot sit over there and be sending words to us that he cannot come. “The court has said that for the purpose of what we are doing that he should come over.” Meanwhile, a Chief Operational Officer with the Lagos State Fire Service, Adebayo Musiliu, told the court on Friday that his observation revealed that the building did not collapse as a result of explosion. Musiliu, who said he has 34 years of experience in rescue operation, insisted that there was nothing to suggest that the accident occurred as a result of explosion. He said, “All the bodies recovered were not dismembered or burnt. There were also no scattered bricks. The floors and pillars were also not shattered; rather the six-storey collapsed on top of each other. The collapsed building did not depict any sign of explosion or implosion.”
