The Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin(UNILORIN), Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, has called on President-elect Muhammadu Buhari to build on the education philosophy of late Chief Ọbáfẹ́mi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awólọ́wọ̀, GCFR.
Ambali said this at the annual Back-to-Schoolprogramme of the Nigerian Universities Education Students’ Association (NUESA) of the university, celebrated in memory of Awolowo, premier of the old Western Region.
Ambali opined that prioritizing education is the way forward, as was demonstrated by Awolowo.
“Every child must be given an opportunity to good and quality western education. And that’s what Chief Obafemi Awolowo stood for," Ambali said.
"One of the pillars of his philosophy, one of the visions he had, was to make education free for every child.
"And today, many of us are beneficiaries of free education that Chief Ọbáfẹ́mi Awólọ́wọ̀ started in those days."
Ambali therefore called on the incoming government to emulate the celebrated statesman.
Happily, there is a new government coming on board to build on the philosophy and vision of the sage because education is the foundation," the Vice Chancellor said.
“For any nation to become a great nation, or to take its place in the comity of nations, for any nation to make a significant impact, that nation must have its citizens well educated."
Chief Awólọ́wọ̀ Region a Nigerian nationalist, statesman who played a key role in Nigeria's independence movement.
He died on the 9th of May 1987 aged 78.
