An elated Serena Williams described her third French Open triumph as "incredible" after she defeated Lucie Safarova in a thrilling back-and-forth final on Saturday.
World number one Williams overcame illness to triumph 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 to win the 20th grand slam title of her superb career on the famous Roland Garros clay.
The American was pushed all the way by the plucky 13th seed, though, surrendering a 4-1 lead in the second set as Safarova forced a decider.
"To win three times is incredible for me." she said on court after collecting her prize. "I also want to say thank you to my family and my team, it's wonderful to have the large support without which it would not be possible to win.
"Thank you to the fans, who have been magnificent... outstanding."
Williams also took the time to commend a fine display from her Czech opponent.
"Congratulations to Lucie Safarova, who has proved a very, very good competitor," she added. "Congratulations for putting on a tremendous match for the fans and the tennis public."
